'"So this is my birthday treat," Theo said, gazing about him.' I think the author chose this sentence to reel in the reader. Why this would reel them in is that you would be curious as to who Theo was, and what he was looking at. That way, they wouldn't just get bored and abandon it.

"Nothing is the way it’s supposed to be when you live on an island with a billion birds, a ton of bird crap, a few dozen rifles, machine guns, and automatics, and 278 of America’s worst criminals—“ the cream of the criminal crop” as one of our felons likes to say."
I think the author thought that this would show the hardships of living on Alcatraz. This also paints a decent picture. This also tells you that 278 criminals are on the island.

'When I wake up, the other side of the bed is cold.' I think the author chose this sentence to show Katniss was in bed alone. It shows her little sister went to sleep with heir mom. the author wants to show that Prim had a nightmare and went to sleep with her mom. Prim had a nightmare that she was chosen to go in to the Hunger Games.

"Very unluckily for me, Erica Crane's locker is right next to mine."
Well, the author definitely wrote this to describe jealousy and hate between the two characters.
She is probably trying to show that there may be some deep dark history between them.

My first sentence is: "Word of the bathroom incident spread immediately."
I think the author picked this sentence to be the first sentence because at the end of the last chapter Clarisse pulled Percy into the women's bathroom. Now about Percy got her back the rumer is spreading all around the camp. Percy is at a camp where you stay there forever I think... Now they're going to play capture the flag and Annabeth wants Percy on her team.

I had no knew books to read so I am rereading a book.
The first sentence is; The prisoner stood with his hands tied in front of him, tired, beaten and filthy but with a proud back befitting his royal Indian heritage.
I think that the author put this as the fist sentence because she wanted to raise interest in the story and because the particular sentence and/or paragraph helps make the whole inter book come together.

When my brother fudge was five, he fond money in a very big way. I think Judy Blume put that sentence in there because the book might be all about Fudge and his money.
