I think that it is to get the reader into the book. It is called a hook. If you don't like the book that you are reading it is all because of how the writer presents the book to you.

It is the 3rd book in The Protectors and there is also the fugitives and I finished that set. I think that the author wrote this sentence so the readers with probable to wonder when the kids in the book will go to the school of fear. Will the kids's families wonder about this guy Roder Williams. Ask if Rodger is Still alive. Did he die at Elementary School? Why is the number one hundred seventy-nine?

I think the author is telling us that Rafe and his little sister and friend are in big trouble. It is a mystery. Why are they in trouble and in the back of a police car? He wants to make the reader find out by reading the book.

I think they chose the sentence so you could imagine where they were. Another reason they chose this sentence is because the author wanted you to be interested. He also wanted you to know where the story was starting. He also told you that all was calm.
